Science

Science is an exciting subject at Canbury School with generous curriculum time and a well-equipped laboratory. We follow a Pearson (Edexcel) five year course from Year 7 to Year 11, culminating in two GCSEs in Combined Science. From the beginning of Year 7, students study a range of scientific topics in Biology, Chemistry and Physics, which are relevant to today’s world, and which give them life-long practical and communications skills. They are also encouraged to explore their attitudes to hot topics, such as environmental and economic issues.

It is essential that students develop analytical skills to apply what they learn in class to new situations in the real world, and this is a key part of the GCSE (9-1) qualifications which were introduced in 2016. Therefore, a large emphasis is placed on self-directed learning, thinking logically, risk taking, and problem solving, which are all attributes that employers value.

Lessons are varied, and use textbook and online resources produced by Pearson, as well as engaging video clips, class discussions, and practical work which is a key focus of lessons throughout the five years at Canbury School.
