Canbury School is very much a local School which serves the local community. Most pupils live in Kingston or its neighbouring boroughs, a few come from further afield. About ten per cent of those on roll are “International students” who come from countries such as Korea and Japan and for whom Canbury offers a special English language programme (ESOL).
Being a small School serving the local community, Canbury supports local charities every year through a variety of ways. In recent years the list of both National and local charities has included: “Born too Soon” at Kingston Hospital, “The Shooting Star Trust” and its new children’s hospice at Hampton, “Warren Park Residential Home” on Kingston Hill, Cancer Research, Jeans for Genes, RNLI and The Royal British Legion. Many fundraising events have been organised by staff, parents and pupils such as Sponsored Swims, the annual Sponsored Walk in Richmond Park, Auction of Promises and Artefacts, biscuit and cake sales, Mufti Days, raffles and tombolas and many more. Thousands of pounds have been raised for these charities.
In the much wider Community, Canbury is also involved in helping its ‘sister’ School in Kenya by providing books, shoes and other equipment and also clothes and blankets for the Street Children of the Congo.
By encouraging children to participate and contribute to these worthwhile charities, Canbury pupils gain a sense of responsibility towards others and acquire important skills which help them with working together as a team, organisation and leadership.
